English Valleys high schoolers in the school’s second chance reading program ended last school year 2.1 grade levels higher on average in reading than when they started the program.
Carrie Burdick, who has led the school’s second chance reading program for one year, gave positive progress reports for both junior high and high school students before the English Valleys School Board at a meeting July 8.
Following in the steps of the high schoolers, the junior high second chance reading students advanced their reading skills by 1.8 grades at the end of last school year.
Out of 66 students in grades 7-12, each student read an average of 12 books. The average number of words mastered by high schoolers was 281. For junior high students, it was 274.
Burdick reported that 30.2 percent of the students enrolled last year tested out of the program.
IN OTHER BUSINESS
• The board approved hiring Dianna Stiller as cross country coach with a salary of 7.7 percent of the base salary for 2010-11. The board also approved hiring Jamie Cavey as the head girls track coach and head girls basketball coach. She will receive 12.1 percent of the base salary for basketball and 7.7 percent of the base for track. The base salary has yet to be set by the board.
• The board approved the resignation of Al Mews as assistant football coach.
The next meeting will be held Thursday, Aug. 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the library of EV High School.
