Grinnell Police arrest 8 in auto burglary and theft investigation

The Grinnell Police Department has arrested eight individuals in connection to a series of motor vehicle thefts and automobile burglaries that have occurred over the past couple months.

According to Christopher Wray, sergeant, Grinnell police followed up on various leads and information developed as a result of these investigations, as well as information obtained from other law enforcement agencies, to identify and charge a number of individuals in connection to these crimes.

Those charged include:

• David James Thompson, 20, Grinnell, charged with one count of Theft in the Second Degree, a Class “D” Felony in connection to a motor vehicle theft that occurred in late July of this year.

• Angela Marie Barnell, 23, Grinnell, is charged with one count of Theft in the Second Degree (Possession of Stolen Property), a Class “D” Felony in connection to a motor vehicle theft that occurred in late July of this year.

• Zachary Vaughn Richardson, 19, Grinnell, is charged with Theft in the Second Degree (Possession of Stolen Property), a Class “Felony” in connection to a motor vehicle theft that occurred late July of this year. A warrant Richardson’s arrest has been issued by Grinnell police as he is currently incarcerated in Alabama on unrelated criminal charges.

• A 17-year-old juvenile from Grinnell has been charged through Juvenile Court with one count of Theft in the Second Degree, a Class “D” Felony, in connection to the theft of a motor vehicle which occurred during the late evening hours of July 12, or early morning hours of July 13.

• Jacob Charles Willis, 19, Grinnell, charged with one count of Theft in the Second Degree (Possession of Stolen Property), a Class “D” Felony, in connection to the theft of a motor vehicle which occurred during the late evening hours of July 12 or the early morning hours of July 13.

On Aug. 2, Grinnell Police Investigator Dan Johnson and Officer Stuart Fricke developed investigative leads and information pertaining to a car burglary investigation which led to the execution of a search warrant at 1404 West Street, Apartment #3.

Information and evidence were obtained which led to the arrests of the following individuals:

• David Lee Butler, 21, Grinnell, charged with one count of Theft in the Fourth Degree (Possession of Stolen Property), a serious misdemeanor; one count of Possession of Marijuana, a serious misdemeanor; and one count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

Butler was processed at the Grinnell Police Department and subsequently transported to the Poweshiek County Jail where he made his initial court appearance. He was later released and is currently awaiting a court date.

• Timber Dean Hamilton, 22, Grinnell, charged with one count of Burglary in the Third Degree of a motor vehicle, an aggravated misdemeanor, stemming from the car burglary which occurred during the late evening hours of June 30 or early morning hours of July 1.

In addition, Hamilton was charged with Theft in the First Degree, a Class “C” Felony, stemming from the theft of a motor vehicle which occurred during the late evening hours of June 24 or the early morning hours of June 25.

Assisting Johnson and Fricke in executing the search warrant were members of the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office as well as Corporal Mike Dickenson and Detective Dave Menninga with the Grinnell Police Department.

All of the motor vehicles stolen in these incidents have since been recovered.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
